Sunday, June 22

Today we had to make our own breakfast because we stayed in an efficiency unit in Holyrood. By tonight we should be in Salmon Cove. Due to our early departure we arrived in Brigus before the Hawthorne Cottage National Historic site was even opened so, we just looked at the storyboards and around the outside.
We drove next to Cupids which has an ongoing excavation site of a plantation settled in the early 1600's. Our guide was enthusiastic for 2 hours about the history of this locale. We even did a mock dig and they took our photo for their Facebook site.
In Bay Roberts, we decided on outdoor vs indoor and went to Mad Rocks Scenic Point where we saw some more icebergs.
Harbour Grace claim to fame was a ship from 1916 anchored in the mouth of the river and a CF-QB1 airplane displayed by the side of the road.
In Carbonear we stopped for coffee at the McDonald's and I spotted two more icebergs across the top of the town. Next we located our B&B, At William's Rest, which is the most gorgeous place, perched up high with a view of Conception Bay. There we spotted two more ice bergs (and yes I still get excited seeing them).
Across the bay you can see a beach and our hostess informed us about a trail that goes up through the woods to the top of the cliffs so we had to go see it. It was about a 1 km climb for an amazing view of Conception Bay and the bergs.
Earlier we heard from a local that at the beach at Freshwater there were capelin rolling. That means these small fish are jumping out of the water onto the shore to spawn and sometimes the whales follow them in. Well, Carl was all in so, off we went. Around 9:30 pm, the capelin did come in but, they were not jumping out rather, they were being netted by the locals and then put into large buckets so they could take them home and eat them in various forms. Thus, ended our day.
