Feb 2016 Sint Maarten

SATURDAY, FEB 6
It is time to leave this wonderful place.  I am sad to go because I have thoroughly enjoyed the week.  I would happily return to this island and this resort.  The resort is scheduled for renovation in the near future.  I did see signs of one of the rooms being torn apart.  The fixtures and furniture are a bit dated but, everything works.  Time to go.  Ta ta for now.  Stay tuned for the next adventure and thanks for reading.
FRIDAY, FEB 5
The day started with another good breakfast buffet.  I remembered to try the cafe latte machine and that turned out delicious.  After breakfast, I again caught up on some reading in the lobby while Carl went shopping to the grocery store nearby. Lunch was a chicken caesar salad followed by more beach time and books.  Dinner was special today because it was a Creole buffet complete with suckling pig and other creole dishes.  Everything was great.  It is a bit sad today since it is our last day here.  It has been a really amazing holiday.  I love this island and it's people.
THURDAY, FEB 4
Another beautiful day in paradise. The weather was a little windier than we have seen so far but still a gorgeous day.  Today is another chill day.  After breakfast, we caught up on reading our newspapers from home sitting in the open air lobby.  In the afternoon I went back to my beach lounge chair and soaked up the atmosphere with a couple of good books until sunset.
Dinner was tasty and followed with pineapple carpaccio topped with pineapple sorbet.  After dinner, we again listening to music in the lobby until we got tired.
WEDNESDAY, FEB 3
Had to return the car this morning but Carl had to fill up the tank before doing so.  It cost us $8.00 for the gas to drive around the island for the whole day.  After breakfast, we headed over to the local market.  They have market days on Wednesday and Saturday.  Lots of vendors with the usual souvenir stuff such as shirts, hats, tops, bags, local jewellery, etc.  Carl bought a T-shirt with a Saint Marten logo.
After lunch I went to the beach to sit on a chair with a book and that is where I stayed until dinner time.  It was heavenly!
After dinner, we listed to a gentlemen playing the steel drums.  He kept asking us to get up and dance and played "romantic" music.  There was maybe a dozen of us in the lobby but some people did get up to dance including us once.
TUESDAY, FEB 2
Today was our day to explore the island and I mean the entire island.  We were able to rent a car from right in the hotel lobby (how civil) and we set off to see many of the island beaches.
The first beach was Baie Rouge, a nice soft, sandy beach.

The next beach was Cupecoy Bay.
Further along the island we stopped at Dawn Beach/Oyster Pond.  Dawn Beach was very pretty with lots of accomodation nearby.

On the way to the next destination we ran across a beautiful bay called Baie Lucas.  There has been a lot of conservation done in this area to preserve the natural habitat of birds and fish.  Across the road was a herd of wild goats climbing the rocks.

Orient Bay is supposed to be one of the more beautiful beaches on the island and while we thought it was nice, there was some seaweed washing up that made it not as attractive.

The last beach stop was Ance Marcel which had a really steep road up the hill and a really steep road coming back down.

The last stop of the day was Grand Case because there is a "carnival" on Tuesday evenings in February. The vendors put out all their finery for sale.
We had a bbq chicken and rib dinner at a Lolo (restaurant on beach) and then walked the strip.  At 8 o'clock, three lovely ladies dressed in all their finery and accompanied by a drumming band danced their way down the main narrow street.
It was a nice show but slighty shorter than we had envisioned.  The drive back to Marigot did not take long and then we chilled in the lobby/bar till bedtime.

MONDAY, FEB 1
We woke  up late, had breakfast and walked to the bus stop to go to Phillipsburg.

It took 45 minutes to get to the tourist area of town.  From here we walked along Back Street (1km), then Front Street. The streets are lined with shops and restaurants.  The shops are competing and offering duty free wares.  Lunch was had at Le Petit Cafe whose specialty is crepes.  With my vegie crepe I had fresh squeezed orange juice.

After getting some energy back, we walked again this time along the beach stopping for ice cream.

The bus brought us back into Marigot and we walked back to the hotel where Carl got a beer and I enjoyed a strawberry dacquiri.  It was a hot, tiring day.  Dinner revived us with caesar salads, grilled shrimp and linguini.  We sat around the lobby and chatted with ours we are coming to know until bedtime.
SUNDAY, JAN 31
Woke up with the sun and set out to see what our buffet breakfasts will entail.  There was a good variety from bacon, pancakes and eggs to buns, cold cuts, cheese and fresh fruits with good coffee and a variety of teas.  We did not leave here hungry.
After breakfast Carl got the bright idea to go for a walk.  Well, 9,162 steps later we returned to the hotel in time for lunch.  We saw a good portion of Marigot and walked to the top of the hill to see Fort Louis.  It was certainly a gorgeous view of the island.

Lunch was pretty good. A nice choice of salads and sandwiches.  We both had panini's but different kinds.   It was served with the weirdest french fries I have ever seen.  They were U shaped, like little boats.

I enjoyed the rest of the afternoon relaxing in a lounge chair on the sand near the ocean and reading a good old fashioned book.  The water was quite refreshing.  Dinner is served from 7-10, a little later than I am used to but we also had a late lunch so, not much hardship. Can you believe they served fish n chips for dinner in a french restaturant on the french side of the island?  We both tried it and it was ok but I have been spoiled by Justin's fish cleaning and found a few small soft bones in my fish which turned me off.  I had enough to eat anyway.  After dinner, we relaxed in the lobby listening to some casual live music until it was bedtime.
SATURDAY, JAN 30
Woke up at an ungodly hour this morning and drove to the Park N Fly Valet lot.  From there we got the bus to the airport and got through check in and customs in good time.  The flight left on time and was fairly smooth.  We had packed our own sandwiches for the trip and ate them before getting off the plane.  Air Transat had people meet us and shepherd us to the bus that drove us to our hotel, Le Beach in Marigot on the French Side of the Island.  The view from the airport is very pretty; mountains and water with many sailboats.  Our hotel is right on the water with many sailboats parked nearby.

There is a small beach off to one side but we have not sat out there yet.  We had to wait a little bit for our room but it was no hardship because we had a drink and a nice table outside.  I managed to resist the urge to nap but, Carl did not.  At 5, we had an orientation presentation from Air Transat. They told us about the island including any happenings that we might be interested in.  Kind of unusual in that we didn't get anyone trying to sell us excursions.  From here we walked over to the local supermarket called Simply.  Most of the products are from France and most labels are in French.  Produce is expensive.
Dinner was a la carte.  We were given a choise of three meals.  I tried to eat light with a sweet potato soup and a Parisien salad and Carl ate a little heartier.  It was decent food.  We then sat at the waters edge until I got to tired to stay up any longer.
